This week’s PAU features Ms Tara Bai, a 60 year
old woman living near SEEPZ second gate, past the pipeline. She lives on the
platform, in a shanty house made using sheets of metal put together covered by a
lot of cloth. A dog to keep her company, this old woman, despite her senility,
doesn’t depend on the age old tradition of begging for a living. Working in the
hot sun and the chill nights, she roams around the streets of Andheri picking
rags and depositing them in a sack, earning a pittance everyday. And she doesn’t
fail to share what little she has with her faithful dog. It is indeed a shame on
us that we let such people struggle on the streets, walk past them day in and
day out and don’t do a thing to ease their suffering. Having this in mind, Amar
has taken it upon himself to alleviate her hunger at least, and every month he
gives her 10 kg of rice and dhal without fail.
What she now needs is a way to keep her out of the
shivering nights and basic medical attention when required. We are hopeful that
some one who can, will do the needful as soon as possible.
